Jessica’s Bookshelf – Sensible Shoes

A group of very lovable women in my town introduced me to this book. Over the years, pretty much every book they have recommend has been deeply impactful to me in one way or another. Sensible Shoes continued that tradition.

This is a self-help book in fiction format. It’s the powerful story of four women, each with issues, pain, and “untouchable” baggage from their past. Through their interactions God begins to move them from brokenness to wholeness, and the journey is breathtakingly inspiring. This story is both well-written and extremely insightful. No shallow platitudes, no quick fixes that deny the heartache real people struggle with every day–“Sensible Shoes” is honest and raw in the way life is, and in being so it opens the door for authentic reflection on the ways God stirs us to step beyond our pasts and embrace a life that is rich, deep, and saturated with His real world presence.

Choosing a character I “most” identify with in this book was very challenging. I found myself identifying with all four women at different chapters in their stories and in different chapters of mine. Through the healing and growth story I heard some of my own healing and growth- some of which I’ve done…some of which still needing to be worked on.
