SUNDANCE BOULDER 2027: SURPRISING WAYS TO ENJOY AN UNFORGETTABLE FESTIVAL

With Sundance Boulder 2027 coming to Colorado, screenings, Pearl Street stops, and winter afternoons in Boulder offer a memorable new way to experience the Festival close to home.

The Sundance Film Festival will take place January 21 through January 31, 2027. The Festival will begin its next chapter in Boulder, Colorado.

For those of us who live along the Front Range, that feels especially exciting.

One of the most recognized gatherings in independent film is moving into our backyard. Sundance will bring screenings, world premieres, filmmaker conversations and special events to Boulder. However, some of the most memorable moments may happen between those events.

Picture a morning coffee before a screening. Then wander Pearl Street with a couple of hours to spare. Afterward, grab dinner downtown and talk about a film you cannot stop thinking about. You might even fit in a winter walk with the Flatirons in the background.

That combination feels very Boulder.

Whether you have followed Sundance for years or simply want to know what is coming, this guide can help. Here is what we know so far, along with a few ideas for enjoying an unforgettable Sundance weekend in Boulder.

When Is Sundance Boulder 2027?

Mark January 21 through January 31, 2027, on your calendar.

The first Boulder edition will run for 11 days. Sundance will premiere films from January 21 through January 26. Screenings from the Festival program will continue throughout the event.

Sundance has also announced an online component from January 28 through January 31 for audiences elsewhere in the United States.

As of September 2026, several important details are still to come.

Sundance says passes and ticket packages go on sale in October. Organizers expect to release the program and screening schedule in December. Single-film tickets will follow in early January 2027.

That makes this a blog worth bookmarking.

Where Will Sundance Boulder 2027 Take Place?

Sundance will use several venues across a relatively compact section of Boulder rather than one large festival complex.

According to Sundance, the Festival venues sit within roughly a two-mile radius. The footprint stretches from downtown Boulder to nearby cultural venues and the University of Colorado Boulder campus.

Sundance has announced these theater venues for 2027:

• Boulder Theater
• Boedecker Theater at Dairy Arts Center
• Gordon Gamm Theater at Dairy Arts Center
• Boulder High School Auditorium
• Casey Middle School Auditorium
• Chautauqua Auditorium
• Cinemark Century Boulder
• eTown Hall
• Macky Auditorium Concert Hall
• Muenzinger Auditorium
• Roe Green Theatre at CU Boulder

Sundance also plans talks and programming at Canyon Theater at the Boulder Public Library District, Dairy Arts Center, eTown Hall and Old Main on the CU Boulder campus.

For locals, the geography adds another interesting layer to the Festival.

The event will become part of Boulder rather than sit apart from it. Screenings and conversations will take place at familiar locations, including Boulder Theater, Chautauqua and the CU campus.

And then there is Pearl Street.

Pearl Street During Sundance Boulder 2027

If you are coming from Erie, Lafayette, Louisville, Longmont or elsewhere along the Front Range, consider making the movie only part of your outing.

Downtown Boulder is particularly well suited to wandering.

Four blocks of Pearl Street form a brick-paved pedestrian mall. Shops, restaurants, galleries, coffee shops and historic buildings surround the walkway. Downtown Boulder also extends well beyond those four blocks.

That makes it easy to imagine a Sundance day without much of an itinerary.

Start with coffee. Walk to a screening. Browse a bookstore before the next event. Find somewhere for lunch. Then wander a little farther than you planned.

What to Do Between Sundance Boulder 2027 Screenings

A festival can make it tempting to schedule every minute.

We would leave a little room to explore.

Sundance may bring you to Boulder, but time between screenings gives you a chance to experience the city too.

If the weather cooperates, head toward Chautauqua for views of the Flatirons. You can also visit the Museum of Boulder or browse local galleries downtown. Another option is to explore the historic architecture around Pearl Street or stop at the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse.

January requires some flexibility, of course.

Colorado winter weather can change quickly, so check the forecast before you leave. A sunny walk, a snowy afternoon and a warm coffee stop can all fit into the same Boulder day.

Getting to Sundance Boulder 2027

Transportation may be one of the most important parts of planning your visit.

Do not assume you can drive directly to each venue and park outside.

The City of Boulder describes Sundance as a “park-once” experience. Most Festival venues will not offer dedicated parking. Instead, the city encourages visitors to use regional transit, local buses, walking, biking and rideshare options.

Regional transit and Park-n-Ride locations may be especially useful for visitors coming from elsewhere along the Front Range.

The Flatiron Flyer connects Boulder with Denver, Westminster, Broomfield, Louisville and Superior. Other regional routes connect communities north and east of Boulder.

During the Festival, local transit plans call for service between venues, restaurants, hotels and gathering places. Buses may serve Festival destinations as often as every 10 to 15 minutes.

If you drive into Boulder, paid city parking will remain an option. However, transportation plans may change as the Festival approaches. Check the City of Boulder’s official Sundance transportation page before leaving home for the latest information.

Tickets, Passes and the Sundance Boulder 2027 Film Lineup

Sundance has not announced every detail of the 2027 Festival yet.

And that is normal at this stage.

Sundance says passes and ticket packages go on sale in October 2026. The program and screening schedule will follow in December. Single-film tickets will go on sale in early January 2027.

The Festival welcomes the public, so you do not need to work in the film industry to attend.

If you have always watched Sundance from a distance, 2027 could be your chance to experience the Festival closer to home.

What Sundance Could Mean for Boulder’s Local Businesses

There is another side of this story that we are especially interested in watching.

Sundance does not happen only inside theaters.

Visitors may grab coffee before morning screenings and meet for dinner afterward. They may also browse stores between films, stay in hotels, order lunch, grab drinks and explore the city.

Boulder is preparing its hospitality and business community for the Festival. The city and its partners are also sharing resources with local businesses and nonprofits interested in Festival-related activities.

The Festival is expected to bring additional visitors and activity to Boulder. However, past attendance and economic figures from Utah do not predict what Boulder will experience in 2027.

For us, the more interesting part is what visitors may discover while they are here.

A film might bring someone to Boulder for the first time. However, a coffee shop, bookstore, restaurant, gallery or unexpected conversation might become just as memorable.

Why Sundance Boulder 2027 Feels Like a Colorado Story

There is something fitting about independent film beginning its next chapter here.

Boulder brings together art, outdoor spaces, restaurants, bookstores, small businesses and a creative culture. Sundance will add independent film and storytelling to that mix. As a result, Front Range residents will have another reason to spend a winter day exploring the city.

For those of us in Northern Colorado, that may be one of the most interesting parts of Sundance Boulder 2027. Experiencing the Festival does not require filling every minute of the day.

It might mean coffee before a screening, a walk along Pearl Street afterward and dinner spent talking about a film you knew almost nothing about a few hours earlier.

That sounds like a pretty good Colorado day to us.

Sundance Boulder 2027 will mark a new chapter for both the Festival and Boulder.

Meanwhile, Boulder will have a rare opportunity to showcase its vibrant creative culture. For those of us living nearby, the move brings a celebrated independent film experience much closer to home.
